In Yakushima, the 16th days of the first, fifth, and ninth months of the lunar calendar are known as "Yaman-kami no Hi" (Days of the Mountain Gods). Traditionally, those who work in the mountains do not enter them on these days, but instead, they express gratitude to the mountains and pray for safety.

It is said that entering the mountains on these days can lead to injuries or getting lost.

While some simplification has occurred in modern times, and some companies now offer mountain tours on these days, I myself, before establishing Yamakara, used to conduct tours on Yaman-kami no Hi. However, I experienced incidents such as a bone-fracturing accident in an otherwise harmless area and being trapped in the mountains due to a road collapse during an overnight trek.

Due to these experiences, Yamakara Yakushima has established all Yaman-kami no Hi as closed days since its inception. On these days, we guides gather to visit shrines and perform maintenance.

These days often coincide with seasonal changes, bringing dramatic shifts in weather and climate, which can easily affect one's physical condition. The numerous mountain accidents on these days are not merely superstitions but reflect the wisdom of our predecessors, who understood the mountains through experience, and a message from nature. We intend to continue cherishing Yaman-kami no Hi.

As these days are based on the lunar calendar, our closed days vary each year. For 2025, our tour closed days will be:

・February 13th (Thursday)
・June 11th (Wednesday)
・November 5th (Wednesday)
